Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle was diagnosed with Asperger’s, a high-functioning form of autism in 2008. In an interview with the Observer, the singer revealed said, “It was the wrong diagnosis when I was a kid. I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label. Now I have a clearer understanding of what’s wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself.”
A Scottish therapist confirmed that Susan had an above average IQ. She was diagnosed with Asperger’s (or Asperger Syndrome) a neurodevelopmental disorder. Individuals with this condition lack eye contact, face problems while holding conversations, repetitive behaviour, have poor social skills or may not show the right facial expressions.
Asperger’s affects the communication skills and social interaction which ultimately causes an inability to form a healthy relationship. As a child, she was often labelled as being “different” and bullied by others.
Asperger’s is linked with anxiety and an inability to deal with tough situations suffering from bouts of depression and mood swings. Her being diagnosed with Asperger’s neither distressed nor confined her. “It will not make any difference to my life. It’s just a condition that I have to live with and work through.” she also said, “I think people will treat me better because they will have a much greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do.”
