Ms.Ridhima Sharma, Clinical Psychologist with Team Autism Connect Association
Autism Spectrum Disorder is usually misunderstood. People often consider that children with Autism are doomed. But this is not true. A variety of therapies like behavioral modification, sensory integration, nutritional changes and other interventions can help a child on the autism spectrum make great progress.
Many parents feel that the diagnosis of their child would close the door for their success. They are often told that their child will never talk, s/he will never be able to make friends, they will never have a job or get married. Certainly there are many parents who have heard the pronouncement “Autism is a lifelong condition”.
Parents should not accept the limits that are placed on their child by the society. Every child is special and has the capability for learning, expressing, communicating and experience the joy and happiness of life.
My personal view and experience as a Psychologist and a therapist working with children on the spectrum says that regular therapies and training to such kids will definitely improve their overall quality of life. There are many techniques that can be applied to help their child overcome their problems.
So it does not matter what you are told by others, please know that there is hope for your child and every child is special. Others don’t know what your child can do and what are his/her abilities. But you are the parent, you have more experience with your child that nobody else can match. As a parent, never give up on your child. There is hope and keep that hope alive !
