Challenges Faced By Kids With Autism In Classrooms

Autism is a developmental disorder affecting the verbal & non-verbal communication and social skill of the child, generally noticeable before 3 years, that affects a child’s performance. Other characteristics of Autism are:

  1. Repetitive behavior

  2. Stereotype movement

  3. Resistance to change in daily routine

Today we all are talking about ‘Inclusive Education’ where all children get equal education without discrimination and schools also have to change themselves according to the need of the child. A school is a place where children learn a lot of things and are important lessons in their life. Apart from many benefits children with Autism faces many challenges in school in their day-to-day life.

 

  • They need constant instructions which are not available in classrooms.
  • Sensory challenges like yelling, hall buzzer, echoing, etc. can be trigger
    points or overwhelming for children with Autism.

  •  It is very difficult to follow the same routine in school like playing, activities & studies so a change in routine can be stressful for ASD & sometimes maladaptive behavior can be increased if they face unpredictable situations in school.

  • Time transaction is difficult to follow watching between one activity to another activity or one class to another is frustrating.
  • Schools are more focused on academics due to they often ignore the needs of the child.
  • Schools do not have proper facilities to change according to a child’s or fulfill his/her needs.
  • They face difficulty in social communication and in school communication is everywhere and sometimes child also aware that we can’t talk same as we talk in classrooms because of that they get isolated and staff members also don’t know how to handle this issue.
  • Children with Autism didn’t get chance to participate in school programs

  • Autistic children also faced difficulty in adjusting in school environment
    because most of the time schools don’t have proper infrastructure and facilities for them or they don’t have trained staff.
  •  Handwriting is a biggest challenge for them because it requires multitasking means fine motor skill, eye hand, visual perception etc. everything is required in a same time.
