Developmental Pediatric Consultation

What is Developmental Pediatric Consultation?

A developmental (or developmental–behavioral) pediatrician is a medical specialist trained to evaluate and manage developmental, behavioral, and learning differences in children — including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They work as part of a medical home and coordinate care with therapists and schools.

How does it work in Autism?

The pediatrician performs a comprehensive medical and developmental assessment (history, exam, standardized screening), identifies co-occurring conditions (e.g., seizures, sleep problems, feeding issues), recommends therapies, orders investigations when needed, and helps create a care plan and referrals. They monitor progress and medication needs over time.

What are the benefits of Developmental Pediatric Consultation?

  • Accurate medical/ developmental diagnosis and identification of co-occurring medical issues.

  • Coordinated care across therapies, schools, and specialists.

  • Evidence-based recommendations and monitoring for interventions and medications.

  • Support for families in navigating services and resources.

What are the side effects?

Not applicable to the consultation itself. Possible downsides: long wait times for specialists, costs, and the emotional burden of medical testing or complex recommendations
