It is corrosive to metals and hazardous when consumed in a concentrated form. Still, some people use bleach to treat many ailments and believe that this ‘sacrament’ is capable of overcoming diseases known to mankind.

Jim Humble, a former Scientologist now an Archbishop of the ‘Genesis II Church of Health and Healing’, has named this chemical sacrament as the ‘Master Mineral Solution’ (MMS). He describes it as a sure cure for cancer, diabetes, lyme disease, multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s, alzheimer’s, autism, arthritis, high cholesterol, kidney or liver diseases, HIV/AIDS, allergies, urinary tract infections, digestive problems, obesity, tumours, cysts, depression, eye or ear infections, problems with prostate, erectile dysfunction, etc. “I know it sounds too good to be true,” Jim Humble wrote, “But according to feedback I have received over the last 20 years, I think it’s safe to say MMS has the potential to overcome most diseases known to mankind.”

Kerri Rivera, a Bishop of Humble’s church, vouched for this absurd notion claiming that MMS enemas could cure children with Autism by killing the harmful pathogens inside them. She was in the spotlight for promoting MMS as a cure for people with autism. She has penned a book called ‘Healing the Symptoms Known as Autism’ and an ebook in which she describes how to take MMS. She has claimed that many children were cured of their Autism, however, no evidence were found about the whereabouts of the children she mentioned or any proof whether they even ever had autism.

Neurological disorders, like Autism, have not yet been found to have a definitive cure and seem to be a result of genetic and developmental factors. Multiple reasons are suspected to be the root cause of Autism – like rare gene variations or mutations and other environmental factors. The Vice News reported, “Humble and Rivera [advocate MMS] as a lifestyle, thereby promoting the damaging idea that the complex neurological condition known as autism is essentially a gut problem that you can somehow power wash out of your body by pouring industrial bleach into both ends. And their followers believe them.”

The claims made by Humble and Rivera are repudiated by science. Dr. Paul Wang, a paediatrician and senior vice president of Autism Speaks, explained that parasites do not cause Autism. “No, parasites do not cause autism,” Wang said. He confirmed that MMS is bleach.

Regardless of how clearly deceiving Jim Humble’s claim is, still, many people are still curious or influenced by him.

The biggest use of chlorine dioxide is in bleaching wood pulp, cotton and cotton-polyester fabrics.
