They only try communicating (monologues) with their parents or caregivers to indicate needs. They lack empathy and rarely respond to social overtures made by elders or other children. Also, they do not share the delight of activities (play, games) with others. The level of disability and symptoms varies tremendously from child to child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents dealing with children on the autism spectrum, hear different terms involved with the disorder. They face words such as \u2018high-functioning autism,\u2019 \u2018autism spectrum disorder\u2019,\u00a0\u2018developmental disorder,\u2019\u00a0etc. Still, a child\u2019s unique needs are more important. Getting help to diagnose the child\u2019s symptoms and finding treatment options that address their needs is the first priority of parents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In children,<\/span><strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismconnect.com\/blogs\/autism-spectrum-disorders-characteristics-signs-symptoms-implications-in-adls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autism spectrum disorder<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is diagnosed by the presence of multiple symptoms that disturb their ability to communicate, maintain a social relationship, learn, and play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Social Behaviour And Autism<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For children on the spectrum, maintaining a pleasant social interaction can be a difficult task. Social behaviour symptoms that indicate autism include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inappropriate body language and facial expressions that do not match their feelings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of interest and they do not point-out to an object of interest or desire (toys, games, foodstuff).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of interest in people and prefers to stay alone. Fail to participate in social interaction or make friends.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not understand non-verbal cues.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resist when touched or hugged.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Communication Difficulties And Autism<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with autism struggle with speech and communication ability which are easily detectable.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delay in speech development or absence of monosyllables even after completing 2 years<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abnormal tone of voice<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reciting words or phrases repeatedly<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble initiating a conversation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inability to understand simple statements<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Restricted Or Repetitive Behavior<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with autism disorder exhibit obsessive, rigid, and restricted behaviours. They display symptoms that include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repetitive movements such as moving in circles, rocking, clapping, etc\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive attachment to objects (keys, doll, car). Fascinated by parts of their toys (car tyre, the face of the doll)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They line up toys and objects in a particular order, over and over again<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">React to changes in their daily routine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have an abnormal posture and walk in an unusual way<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Other Signs That Indicate Autism<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from social, communication and behaviour symptoms, children with\u00a0<\/span><strong>autism spectrum disorders<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0also display the following problems:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sensory Issues:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many children with autism exhibit hyper or hypo reactions to sensory input (sounds, textures, light, temperature, and pain). They easily get disturbed by even the softest sounds, sudden and loud noises (ringing telephone).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emotional Complications:<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Children on the autism spectrum fail to display their emotions. For no apparent reason, they yell, cry, or laugh hysterically. When aggressive, they can harm themselves.
